On Thursday, October 11, 1492, Columbus wrote: "...at two hours after midnight, the Pinta fired a , my prearranged signal for the sighting of land." Though the site of Columbus' landfall is debated, most evidence suggests Samana Cay in the .

Columbus made several other voyages. He died believing he had found islands near the coast of . He didn't realize that a new continent had been in his way.
